German shorthaired pointer

Post by mandy on Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:18 pm

i would like to introduce everyone to one of my pointer he his called Booton Jesper (luther) and was bred by Mr and mrs j&v Rusk he has an exellent pedigree of field champions and show champions so i would think he is a good example of his breed. I was lucky enough to find him free i adtrader lots of people wanted him but i was chosen as i would give him a working life.He had done a little work on grouse moors and last year i took him with me pheasant beating all season .I had not worked a pointer before and of course because he points ,it sort of made more work for me ,as i had to then go flush the game he was pointing at but it is fascinating watching him do it.This season we were desperately short of pickers up and because i have a spanador and a old lab that can do the job i got volunteered to help.
This was a totally new job for luther he now had to sit and watch the shooting although if a runner was seen he could chase and catch that.He was then expected to find and retrieve the fallen game . He at first was good at chassing the runners but wouldnt bring them back he showed no interest at home with dummies so we couldnt practice he watched the other dogs working though and by the 2nd day he just clicked and brought me 7 pheasants one after anotherand from then on there was no stopping him
retrieving through water and everything none of this is down to any skill of mine i am no dog trainer think its just cause he is doing what he was bred to do. Heis a lovely natured dog and a joy to own.
